To encourage the young to appreciate and perfect themselves in the field of Hindustani Classical Music and to bring out the best amongst the competitors, an open competition in Hindustani Classical Music was started by Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha (Regd.), Jalandhar Punjab (India) in the year 1979. Since then it is organized every year.
GENERAL RULES FOR ANNUAL MUSIC COMPETITION
The Annual Music Competition will be held prior to the Annual Sangeet Sammelan every year. The competition will start at 10:00 A.M. on all the days.
There are Five Categories for the music competition namely:
1. Vocal – Khayal Gayan or Dhrupad Gayan
2. Vocal – Thumri / Dadra / Tappa Gayan – For Senior Age Group only
3. Instrumental (Non-Percussion – Swar Vadya)
4. Instrumental (Percussion – Taal Vadya) – Tabla Vadan
5. Instrumental (Percussion – Taal Vadya) – Pakhawaj Vadan – For Senior Age Group only.
Attention – Participants:
– The special recognition will be given to Dhrupad Gayan.
There are Two Age Groups namely:
1. Juniors (Yuva Varg) from 10+ to 16 Years
2. Seniors (Varishth Yuva Varg) from 16+ 25 Years
There are Three Prizes in each category namely:
1. First | 2. Second | 3. Third
In addition, the winners from the Senior Age Group (Varishth Yuva Varg) will be initiated as ‘Performing Artist’ during the next year’s Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammenlan.
Accomodation: Accomodation in Halls/Dormitories is available on request (on first come-first served basis) at Shree Devi Talab Mandir & Shree Kali Mata Mandir in Devi Talab Complex. The arrangements have been made to provide Beddings in Halls/Dormitories for which hire chargeable will be payable on actual basis.

A. The time duration includes the time taken by the competitor for the tuning of the Instruments, Mike setting etc.
B. A warning bell will be sounded to indicate that only 2 minutes are remaining and the competitor should wind up the performance within the next 2 minutes.
C. The final bell will be sounded at the end of allotted time to tell the competitor to stop the performance.
D. Margin Time: The competitor will be asked to stop the performance after 15 seconds of the total time allowed.
E. Negative marks will be given, if the competitor fails to complete the performance by the final bell.
04. Accompanists with the Competitor:
A maximum of TWO Accompanists will be allowed to accompany the competitor. However, a competitor in Vocal category in addition to the two accompanists, will be allowed to play Tanpura or Swarmandal himself/herself. The use of Electronic Tanpura is allowed. All accompanying instruments like Harmonium, Sarangi, Violin, Swarmandal etc. will be given the same weightage and will be taken at par for the purpose of counting the merit.
The Accompanist (on Tabla, Harmonium, Tanpura) can be provided on request made at the time of submitting the application.
05. Prizes, Awards & Recognitions:
“Certificate of Participation” will be given to the contestants after theirparticipation in the music competition. The Winners securing First, Second & Third positions shall be awarded Cash Prize, Medal/Memento and Merit Certificates.
The Committee may reduce the number of prizes in a particular category/age group, if the number of contestants falls short of Six (6) in that particular category/age group.
The Winners from the Senior Age Group (Varishth Yuva Varg) securing FIRST positions shall be initiated as ‘Performing Artists’ during the next year’s Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan and shall be given an opportunity to perform during the ‘Sangeet Sammelan’.
06. Application for Competition:
The participants shall seek entry to the competition by submitting an ONLINE application on the prescribed format along with entry fee, proof of age & recent passport size photograph.
The last date of receipt of the ONLINE Application along with entry fee of Rs.500/- for Junior Category and Rs.500/- for Senior Category, proof of age & recent passport size photograph will be TWO days prior to the commencement date of the competition.
The applications will be accepted at the ‘Harivallabh Site Office’ at Shree Devi Talab, Jalandhar ONE day prior to the commencement date of the competition from 10.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. The entries to the competition will close at 5.00 P.M. ONE day prior to the commencement date of the competition.
07. Bank Details for Submitting Entry Fee.

Those submitting their applications at the Harivallabh Site Office at Shree Devi Talab, Jalandhar, can pay the Entry Fee in Cash and obtain a receipt for the same.
08. Exemption from Entry Fee:
No Entry Fee will be charged from the competitors who are staying in an orphanage/destitute home, provided they produce a written certificate for the same from the Head of the Institution.
09. Proof of Age:
The participants shall attach documentary proof of his/her age with the application. Legible self attested photocopy of a document will be accepted. However, in case of dispute, the contestant should be able to produce the original document.
10. List of Competitors:
The lists of competitors whose application forms are received within the deadline will be prepared and displayed thereafter in the Site Office of the Mahasabha by 5.00 P.M. (a day prior to the commencement of the competition).
11. Order of Participation:
Draw of lots will take place at 5.00 P.M. a day prior to the commencement of the competition to determine the order of participation in each category & age group. A list of order of participation will be displayed at the venue of the competition immediately thereafter.
12. Judgment:
There shall be a panel of three Judges (at all levels of Competition) for conducting of the music competition, whose judgment will be final. Each Judge will hand over the judgment sheet at the completion of performance by a competitor for Tabulation by the Music Competition Committee.
The decision of the Judges will be FINAL and no objection whatsoever will be entertained.
13. Criteria for Judgment:
The performance of the competitors will be judged as per the following criteria:
(1) Category: Vocal (Khayal Gayan)
1. Purity of Raag & Correct Intonation of Swaras
2. Composition-Bandish
3. Alaap, variety & perfection of Taans
4. Accuracy in Taal & Laya
5. System, standard & general impression in presentation.

Category: Vocal (Dhrupad Gayan)
1. Purity of Raag & Correct Intonation of Swaras
2. Composition-Bandish
3. Nom-Tom Alaap in Dhrupad Style & Layakari
4. Accuracy in Taal & Laya
5. System, standard & general impression in presentation.
(2) Category: Vocal (Thumri/Dadra/Tappa-For Senior Age Group only)
1. Correct pronunciation & Lyrics
2. Bol Banav
3. Emotions & Melody
4. Accuracy in Taal & Laya

(3) Category: Non-Percussion (Swar Vadya)

14. Discipline:
The competitors are required to report at the Announcement Table about their presence 15 minutes before their expected time of performance. Every competitor is required to be present in the competition hall when a particular category starts and when his/her name is announced for performance. In case the competitor fails to reach the stage even after three calls, HE/SHE WILL STAND DISQUALIFIED FROM THE COMPETITION.
The participants will have to observe strict discipline and any of them found indulging in indiscipline of any nature (such as approaching the committee or judges, disrespect towards committee members, judges, use of foul/derogatory language etc.) is liable for disqualification from the competition.
15. Declaration of Results/Presentation of Awards:
The result of the competition will be declared immediately after the competition of a particular category is over. Awards will be presented to the Winners of First, Second and Third positions (Special Prize, if any) on the same day after the competition. “Certificates of Participation” will be given to the contestants after their participation in the music competition.
16. Participation by First Prize Winners:
The Competitors who are declared as First Prize Winners in a particular category and a particular age group during the earlier held “Harivallabh Sangeet Pratiyogita” also referred to as “Music Competition” will not be allowed to compete in the same category & age group again.
17. Review of Rules:
The MAHASABHA reserves the right to amend any rule to make the competition more meaningful and transparent.
